This document is intended to give the casual MIDI user, or potential user, and insight into MIDI. In particular, it is intended to help the reader answer the question
A large amount of technical information is provided as an aid to the understanding of MIDI, it's strengths, and it's limitations. Most of the technical information is derived from the MIDI 1.0 Specification. This does not make this introduction a substitute for the real specification.
The MIDI 1.0 specification is sprinkled with various recommendations of how MIDI devices should respond in various circumstances, and many of these have been omitted, or at least under-emphasised, in this introduction.
Whilst all care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of the information presented, no responsibility is accepted for any errors or damages which may result from any omissions, inaccuracies, ambiguities, or misinterpretations which may exist in this document.
